When I launched Women in Plastics in 2014, I was aware of very few industry events specifically aimed at promoting equality, advocating diversity and championing the development of underrepresented groups.
Perhaps I wasn’t looking in the right places, or perhaps these things were simply not given the promotion they warrant and deserve. Fast forward six years, however, and it seems like the tide is slowly starting to turn.

There now seems to be a group, network or initiative supporting every area of industry and manufacturing – from the broad, such as those covering all STEM sectors – to the very, very niche. Whatever the size, the fact that these platforms are being established and invested in is extremely positive; and absolutely crucial.
The statistics about balance being good for business are undeniable, the case for equality unarguable and the need to develop everyone to the best of their potential unquestionable.

There are a great many businesses, big and small, realising that the way to ensure a strong successive pool of talent means widening the pool as much as possible – making the working environment one that is comfortable and equal for all. This will ultimately produce more ideas, more innovation and more inclusivity – something that is attractive to every company. By making sure staff are happy in their working environment and encouraging development and mentoring will lead to retention and the best performance – a win-win.

Social media has undoubtedly spread the benefits of such movements, indeed, in the lead-up to International Women’s Day this March 8, there has been a swathe of activity promoting the vital difference that a balanced workforce can bring by showcasing those that are blazing a trial, breaking the mould and making their mark.
So, in recognition of IWD 2020, Women in Plastics is sharing some of the women that have been profiled over the recent months. These women are as inspirational as they are intelligent and prove that #mouldingacareer in plastics can bring a wealth of opportunity – opportunity that is open to all.
